Mosquitoes in the basement of an apartment building are a serious problem, requiring an integrated approach and the interaction of some services. It will not be possible to destroy all mosquitoes, but the problem is partially solved, and first of all, it is necessary to destroy the environment where they live and breed, and this is a raw or flooded basement.

This basement is the ideal habitat for mosquitoes.

The basement can be flooded for various reasons - groundwater, rainwater, leaking water pipes or sewers. In order to leave offspring mosquitoes enough puddles with a depth of 2-10 centimeters. How do insects from the basement get into the apartment if mosquito nets are installed on the windows? There are many ways, but the most common are as follows.

  • Ventilation shaft. Mosquitoes easily penetrate into it and rise higher. Make it a rule to install a grill or mesh with very small openings on the ventilation.
  • The entrance. In the afternoon, mosquitoes escape from the heat on the landing, and in the evening they fly out of shelters and rush into the apartments.

The full list is extensive, we give the names of only some of them - Larviol, Teknar, Dimilin, often use checkers and heat-sublimation tablets.

On the territory of the apartment, for the fight against basement mosquitoes, they also use chemicals and resort to folk methods.

Chemicals are divided into insecticides and repellents:

  • Pyrethroid insecticides kill mosquitoes by affecting their nervous system. It can be an aerosol or a mixture used in the fumigant. It is simple to apply an aerosol, it is enough to spray means a little and mosquitoes will not annoy for some time. But the concentration of toxic substances can be dangerous to human health.
  • Fumigators. A fumigator is a device that fumigates a room with poison that destroys insects. The element heats up, at which time pyrethroids evaporate into the air. The insecticide in this case may be in the form of a tablet or liquid. There will be enough tablets for 12 hours, and a bottle of liquid will last for a month.
  • Repellents are usually used to repel insects in the open air, but if there is no other way, you can use it at home, but with caution, an overdose threatens with serious poisoning.

Do not forget about folk remedies against basement mosquitoes:

  • Pyrethrum flowers (Caucasian chamomile) in dried form spread out around the apartment,
  • Oils of eucalyptus, anise and cedar,
  • Tomato seedlings
  • Camphor evaporated over the burner in an amount of 100 grams. This method will save mosquitoes from the whole apartment. For humans, smoke is absolutely safe.

Currently, there are many ways to protect yourself from mosquitoes - ultrasound devices, spirals, mosquito lamps, even on a computer or phone you can download a program that will scare away insects.

Fighting basement mosquitoes in a private house

If you are a resident of a private house, and mosquitoes get you not only in the summer, but also in the winter, then the problem lies in the wet basement, they multiply there actively, and then fly to your rooms. You can’t help with one spray; more serious measures will be required.

Inspect the site and basement. If the building is protected from the penetration of groundwater and precipitation, there are no pipe leaks, which means that the reason is poor vapor and heat insulation. The temperature difference leads to the appearance of condensation that accumulates on the walls and ceiling, mold forms, it then attracts insects. The fight against basement mosquitoes in this case consists in thorough draining. And then in the direct destruction of insects. To do this, purchase any insecticide based on organophosphorus compounds or pyrethroids.

When processing, first of all, pay attention to those places where there are mosquitoes. Then treat ceilings and walls with contact insecticides, starting from a hard-to-reach and distant place, moving to the exit, carefully spraying the windows and ventilation. To destroy the larvae, apply an insecticide in granules. It happens that it is impossible to get into the basement, then the insecticide is sprayed through all possible openings. Turn over everything that holds water twice a week if it rains. Bird baths, shoe washing troughs, litter bins, lids, and pottery will all attract mosquitoes to breed. Remember to clean the saucers under your flower pots, and do not leave water in the pet bowl for more than two days.

Adult mosquitoes rest during the day, usually on weeds or other vegetation. Make your yard less hospitable for mosquitoes by mowing your lawn regularly and remove weeds from the foundation of your home.

Avoid mosquito bites

Even when, after all the precautions, you finally removed the mosquito habitat, some mosquitoes will still buzz around to ruin your pleasure. You can limit the effects of mosquitoes that remain with effective repellents and barriers.

Window and door screens should be of fine mesh and fit snugly, without gaps at the edges. Check your screens for holes and repair or replace as necessary.
Replace the outdoor lighting with yellow "mosquito" lamps. These lamps do not repel insects, but mosquitoes and other pests find them less attractive.

When you are outdoors, use insect repellers as indicated on the label. A common DETA product is very effective, however, it will be necessary to re-process the clothes after 4-6 hours.

Clean clothes, umbrellas and mosquito nets on windows of your home with permithrin-based products such as Permanone. Permethrin repels mosquitoes and ticks, and its effect will last even after a few washings of your clothes.

Some commercially available insecticides can be used by homeowners to control mosquitoes. The use of special sprays around the foundations of buildings, shrubs and grasses will keep adult mosquitoes away from these areas.

We analyze the CO2 supply system

Based on the fact that for the trap to work, it will be necessary to periodically buy liquefied CO2 (carbon dioxide), then its consumption needs to be somehow controlled and saved. Therefore, we analyze how each of the traps consumes CO2.

The Dachny mosquito exterminator has a reducer that controls the gas supply, releasing a small cloud of carbon dioxide every 3.5 minutes. This allows you to rationally use a 10 liter gas cylinder, which with this method of operation may be enough for the entire summer season. The disadvantage is that you yourself can’t increase the gas supply in order to make the trap more attractive for mosquitoes, or vice versa, reduce the gas flow for even greater savings.

In the ANS-A6, the gas supply has its advantages. There is also a gearbox with a pressure scale that you can configure yourself by controlling the gas flow. Also, the presence of a flask with water allows you to visually determine whether gas is supplied without straining your hearing. When the power is turned off, the gas supply automatically stops.

Trapped in the MT-100, the gas reducer is very simple, it does not have any scale, and carbon dioxide flow will have to be controlled by hissing. This is inconvenient, but justifies the cost of the trap itself, because it is six times cheaper than the same mosquito exterminator of the "Country".

The simplest and cheapest MT64 trap is not equipped with a CO2 cylinder, but a small amount of CO2 in it is produced due to the photo-catalytic reaction on the system case. Naturally, there is nothing to regulate. Gas attracts insects, but to increase this effect is not possible.

Analyzing usability

One of the advantages in any device is to configure the device for a specific user, when using various functions you can set the necessary operating modes. From this point of view, MT-64 and MT-100 traps are equally limited in their ability to configure. In the MT-100, you can try to regulate the supply of CO2, and even then by eye, but the gas cylinder will have to be pulled by hand.

As for the more complex ANS-A6, then, firstly, the manufacturer provided the convenience of moving on wheels with the cylinder, and secondly, a long power cord - as much as 10 meters, there are timers for switching the operation on and off, as well as stopping gas supply in the absence of nutrition.

The Destroyer exterminator, although it is the most advanced system in terms of settings, however, it has a small drawback - it is inconvenient to move it together with the cylinder, but this needs to be done only once, because by its characteristics it is designed to protect a large area of ​​40 acres, and does not need to be moved.

The device-exterminator of mosquitoes "Country" works in cycles of 1.5 minutes. First, it releases a portion of gas and heats the body to the temperature of the human body using the built-in heating element, and then, when the mosquitoes fly up, it turns on a powerful fan to suck them in. Then the cycle repeats. In this case, the trap determines with the help of a light sensor when it turns on and when it turns off.

Out of competition is the leader of the mosquito exterminator "Country". He fully justified his appointment by catching about 350 mosquitoes during one night, but he did not catch a midge at all, possibly due to the fact that it easily passed through the device’s grid, and maybe it didn’t even exist that night.

However, the data for just one night is very conditional, because the presence of mosquitoes or midges in a given area at a given time depends on various natural factors. For example, from the wind. Nevertheless, it is safe to say that catching and destroying mosquitoes by simulating the work of the human body is very effective.

What attracts mushroom midges to indoor plants

Have you ever been annoyed by tiny flying insects that seem to appear every time you water your indoor plants? These are mosquitoes, or rather, they are most likely “mushroom mosquitoes”. These mosquitoes attract the moist soil in which your indoor plants sit. They need moist soil as a safe haven for laying eggs, as well as organic matter in the soil for feeding larvae. Besides being annoying, this feeding can cause serious damage to plants.

What are mushroom midges?

Although they are very similar to tiny mosquitoes, mushroom mosquitoes are small flies in Orfelia and Bradysia kinds. They can be identified by narrow legs, light gray or transparent wings, and segmented antennas that are larger than their heads. These are pretty tiny insects. Adults grow from about 1/16 to 1/8 inch in length.

Mushroom mosquitoes are not strong pilots, so they usually remain next to a food source, which is organic matter and fungus in the soil of your indoor plants in pots.

Mushroom mosquitoes lay eggs in the soil, and the emerging larvae feed on organic material in the soil, as well as the root hairs of the plant. Larvae are 1/4 inch translucent white or gray worms with shiny black heads. They may go unnoticed at this stage if you do not have a crop of them. What type of damage does the fungus inflict?

The good news is that fungal mosquitoes do not bite people or pets. Adults also do not do much harm to plants. These are larvae that will chew on tiny nourishing roots, limiting the plant's ability to absorb nutrients and inhibiting plant growth. This is more of a problem in nurseries where sensitive young seedlings are grown in humid conditions. Although you may not grow your plants in a nursery or greenhouse with a large enough population, they can also be a threat to ordinary indoor plants. If you notice how these mosquitoes flutter, and your plants seem to witlessly fade, this may cause damage to the roots of the larvae that feed.

Management of mushroom mosquitoes indoors

Since most of the damage is done by larvae, this helps to understand the life cycle of the mushroom mosquito. In a warm house, tiny eggs can hatch into larvae in just 3 days. They remain in the larval stage for about 10 days before they turn into pupae, and then after about 4 days the adults appear and begin the cycle anew. Cats attract yellow and get stuck in traps. When the trap is full, discard it and put another. This is not a pretty sight, but it is a simple, non-toxic way to kill a large number of adult mushroom mosquitoes. It is also a great way to monitor the presence of fungal mosquitoes and see if their population has become a problem.

Biological control - There are several types of biological control for fungi, but they are mainly used for control in greenhouses where plants reproduce. If the problem gets out of hand with houseplants, you are probably better off sacrificing your houseplants and starting over.

However, if you want to try botanical control, the best choice would be Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (Bti), a bacterium that is used to control mosquitoes in ponds. It also controls mosquitoes, but does not pose a danger to humans or pets. You may need more than one application, but follow the instructions on the label. Look for “Bt” in the form of lumps or pellets in the pest control section or next to the pond.

There are also nematodes that feed on larvae of mushroom mosquitoes. They must be ordered by mail from a plant pest control company, which can be more troublesome than other, faster remedies.
